X Factor Live Show - the second round reviewed
Simon Cowell’s 16-24 year-olds definitely had the best of the night this weekend, with strong performances from all four youngsters.
However, the standout performance of the night had to be that of Ashley Mackenzie, who gave his own interpretation of ‘I’d rather go blind’, and completely owned the performance. He worked the stage and the crowd like he’d done it all his life, and the best thing was that you could tell he really enjoyed it.
Elsewhere, Ben Mills (who had been trying to avoid being compared too much to Rod Stewart!) made the bizarre choice of singing perhaps the most famous Rod Stewart song of all - Maggie May. However, he did put his own stamp on it, showing he’s a talent on the piano and not just vocally.
Voted off this week were 4Sure, who did struggle a little with ‘You’re in my heart‘. However, I think that their performance did show a glimpse of real potential, and so it was a shame to lose them. (Particularly since the McDonald brothers get the ‘What the hell are they still doing here?!’ prize for the second week running.)
Louis was a completely spineless egotist once again - after having said that Robert Allen gave ‘the performance of the night’ he still voted for him to go ‘because I have to save my own group’. No, you don’t Louis - the whole idea of the show is that you keep the talent… Anyway, no doubt we’ll have more of this later in the series when Louis chooses the McDonald brothers over someone outstanding like Leona Lewis.
Speaking of which, we liked Leona’s performance again this week, though there are some doubts in the X Factor Fan camp over her ability to move. Her voice is beyond compare, but she seems to have picked up her stage routine from Tina Turner (not a good thing.)
