Live Show # 3 - Leona, Leona, Leona

October 30th, 2006

There is absolutely no doubt about it - Leona Lewis absolutely shone giving her performance of Summertime, as smooth and classy a rendition of any song I’ve ever heard.

For someone who does genuinely seem so overcome when on stage, her vocals were incredible, and she really threw the gauntlet down for the rest of the X Factor contestants.

In a shock, there were two eliminations this week.  In another shock, the Macdonald brothers are still in (although to be fair, they did better than several acts this week.) Eliminated by public vote was Dionne, who has struggled on stage despite having great vocals - I think Simon was on the money with his ‘backing singer’ comment, at least until she takes a dance class or two.

In a shock, Ashley McKenzie was also one of the bottom three, and narrowly escaped elimination himself through Louis’ choice to eliminate Kerry.  (Which is think is the first sensible thing Louis has done all series - or maybe ever!)

Other stand out performances tonight were:

Eton Road - a nice rendition of Mack the knife in a themed show that doesn’t really suit boy-bands

Robert Allen - left the craziness behind for a cool rendition of My Bojangles

Ben Mills - quality as ever, although he ought to realise that you don’t have to shout to show emotion when you’re singing!

Roll on Abba week next week, where we predict Eton Road to shine (anyone remember Erasure’s Abbaesque EP?!)
